Sydney

Sydney is not the capital of Australia, Canberra has that accolade. However it would be fair to say that Sydney is Australia's premier city.

While backpackers may well be itching to get up north to the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays and Cairnes they should take a good look at Sydney and enjoy the frenetic and off the wall nightlife. There are numerous hostels for backpackers and travelers on a budget. Sydney is certainly a city worth investigation.

A couple of standard snaps here... just to remind you! Look to the menu bar for the Islands

Sydney has many nearby fantastic beaches

Officially the worlds smallest continent, but it still take a jumbo jet three hours to traverse the place. The majority of the 21 million inhabitants live in one of the five coastal areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and  Adelaide. Most of Australia is simply empty. Due to varied climatic changes and its relative geographic isolation, Australia has developed a whole set of unique vegetation and wildlife that any self respecting traveler must investigate. The original Australians, the Aborigines, arrived by land bridges about 48000 years ago. Most of the other settlers have arrived within the last 100 years. Australians are an outgoing and friendly people and welcome folk who come to experience their continent. A safe and exciting place with a massively varying climate and environment. You could travel Oz forever and still not see everything

Sydney harbour bridge.

Sydney harbour bridge is imaginatively used as a platform for the massive new years firework display that has become synonomous with Sydney. A great place to be on New years Eve.

While we enjoy the beauty of this country we should remember the sacrifice from an earlier era..

In 1915 Australians and New Zealanders were angaged in one of the most bloody campaigns of the first world war. The poems of ANZAC Gunner F.E.Westbrook graphically recall the carnage and also tell of his love of Australia.
